You may notice, at least on TV, that they will not use the Ouija board or conduct séances to contact the world beyond. Maybe this is too deep in for the team that is just trying to prove whether or not paranormal activity usually exists in one place or not. Some argue that they’re too scared. I would assume that using these mediums might bring something in that wasn’t there before!
Paranormal investigators spend much more time and money than it may seem in an effort to prove the validity of a haunting and many of them work for free. There is much more waiting around than you see on TV. Investigators can be very determined and enjoy their line of work, but there is a high turnover due to these factors. Paranormal investigators consist of all different types of people. There are those who try to capture ghosts with their video camera just for fun or out of curiosity, though many are educated professional researchers seeking to prove that parapsychology should be recognized as a valid science.
Not all evidence of hauntings are as dramatic as you might think. Paranormal-nyc.com states, “residual hauntings represent most of the reported cases and are usually reported as repeated activity”. Residual hauntings do not involve a ghost or spirit and usually happen at the same time every time. They are “playbacks” of the deceased person’s routine or, in some cases, trauma. For example, you might hear footsteps every night in the same place or the light might dim around the same time every night.
Residual hauntings are said to be the most common. The other types of hauntings are Portal and Intelligent Hauntings. Portal hauntings are rarely talked about, as people are more skeptical of a ghost entering through an imaginary door between the spirit world and ours. Intelligent hauntings are freaky. Just the label it has is intimidating- the idea something beyond your control might be able to outsmart you can be unnerving. Intelligent hauntings are separated from the others in that the ghost has the ability to interact with humans. These spirits tend to take on the same personality they did when they were alive and can be pleasant or a downright nuisance.
We know that paranormal investigators are in search of proving the existence or non-existence of reported hauntings and that they work long hours in an attempt to collect evidence with high-tech equipment. It is said that when paranormal activity is found, it is usually due to a residual haunting. My question is, don’t they ever get scared?
Paranormal investigators tend to be more focused on finding facts and evidence than they are worried about it. After doing a little research, I discovered that the majority of ghost hunters online have had their share of jumpy moments though they were able to brush it off rather quickly. It is a common belief that ghosts will not follow them home when they leave a place that is haunted.
It seems that the average paranormal investigators have a lot on their plate. They seek to expose the spiritual world to the general public or conduct a service like proving to a family that their home is not haunted so they can sleep at night. They have long working hours, travel often, make little (if any) money and are constantly subject to ridicule. You have to admit it though, they certainly have passion and perhaps one day will show the world that they were right all along.
